Afterschool Young Scholars Program Information

The Young Scholars Program is a component of the Collaborative Project, which is a program that gives educators the chance to sharpen up on their educational knowledge and skills through highly professional development.  The Young Scholars is an after school program with the goal of providing hands on learning activities to those students identified as having the potential to succeed.  The program is state funded through the Public School Forum of North Carolina for three years, unless future funds become available to continue the program.

Highly educated teachers and assistants use prior knowledge and information from the collaborative project when assisting students in the after school program.  The Young Scholars Program offers homework assistance, and hands on activities that will help students understand their regular classroom subjects.  When planning activities for the Young Scholars Program our main focus is on Science and Math.  This program has proven to increase EOG scores of past participants, improve students’ attitudes about school, and participation in their classes.

Students who sign up for the program will have the opportunity to take educational field trips and participate in activities, such as the science club and cooking class.  Students are provided healthy snacks and supplies for the activities at no charge.  Students who are allowed to participate in the program must be recommended by the staff and be in the third or fourth grade.  Once recommended students will then receive an invitation to participate in the program.  The Young Scholars Program operates Monday thru Thursday, starting at 2:15 pm and ending at 5:00 pm.
