 MITCHELL COUNTY SCHOOLS

There have been schools in operation in Mitchell county for a very long time.  There may have been schools here even before our formation as a county.  The only time that there is no evidence of operational schools is during the Civil War and the Reconstruction Period which followed.

The oldest schools were one room school houses with one teacher and students of all ages.  Little is now known about these schools, the buildings are gone and locations are often unknown.  What is known, is that early schools were often operated by churches or were financed by parents and students.

In the 1920's school consolidation began.  A better system of roads made this growth possible although some students had to be brought to school in covered wagons.  Increased state support also allowed the growth and development of local schools.  Through the Act of 1933 the State assumed support of the schools and by 1943 the State had assumed responsibility of the buildings.
