Poplar School

In 1981, the Mitchell County Retired School Personnel made a commitment to preserve a piece of the past.  With a $15,000 dollar grant from Z. Smith Reynolds Foundation, they moved Poplar School, an old one room school house, to the campus of Mitchell High School.  The school, at that time, was around 100 years old.  It had been used in the community as a church for many years after it had ceased to function as a school.  The building was donated to the MCRSP by Bertha and Neal Peterson.

The Poplar School House now serves as a museum.  The MCRSP members are planning to bring the interior of the school house back to its original appearance.  The plans include student's desks and benches, a teacher's desk, period lighting and a wood stove.  Mannequins will be dressed in 1800's clothes to complete the illusion.

Poplar School in the late 1930's

The Poplar School operated for many years.  In the early 1960's it became the last community school in Mitchell County.  It consolidated with Tipton Hill in the 1960's.
